Microsoft Word supports Devanagari and regional Indic fonts natively: you simply need to install the font on your operating system first. Once installed, any font appears in Microsoft Word's font dropdown immediately.

This guide covers downloading from our platform or Google Fonts, installation on Windows and Mac, and how to actually type in Hindi and Devanagari in Word.

Step 1

Download the Font

You have two simple options for downloading Hindi and Devanagari fonts:

Option A: From Our Online Font Generator

  • Go to our Font Generator.
  • Type any text to see all font styles previewed in real time.
  • Click "↓ Font" on any font card.
  • The font file (.ttf or .woff2) downloads automatically to your device.

Option B: From Google Fonts

  • Visit fonts.google.com.
  • Search for your desired Hindi font name (e.g. Noto Sans Devanagari, Hind, Poppins, or Karma).
  • Click "Download Family".
  • Extract the downloaded ZIP file to access the .ttf font files.
Step 2

Install on Windows (Windows 10 / 11)

Once you have the .ttf or .otf file downloaded:

  1. Open File Explorer and navigate to your Downloads folder.
  2. Right click the font file (.ttf or .otf).
  3. Select "Install" to install for your user account only, or "Install for all users" to make it available system-wide (requires admin privileges).
  4. Restart Microsoft Word if it was open during installation.

The font will now appear in Word's font list: search for it by typing the exact font name directly into the font box.

Tip: If the font doesn't appear after installation, close Microsoft Word completely (check the Windows taskbar or Task Manager), reopen it, and search for the font name directly in the font selector box.
Step 3

Install on Mac (macOS)

  1. Double click the downloaded .ttf or .otf file.
  2. The macOS Font Book application will open and display a live preview of the font.
  3. Click the "Install Font" button at the bottom of the preview window.
  4. The font is immediately available in all Mac applications, including Microsoft Word for Mac, Pages, and Keynote.
Step 4

Enable Hindi and Devanagari Typing in Word

Installing a font only changes the visual styling of characters: it doesn't automatically switch your keyboard to type in Hindi. To type Devanagari characters in Microsoft Word:

On Windows:

  1. Go to Settings → Time and Language → Language.
  2. Click "Add a language" and search for "Hindi".
  3. Install Hindi and add the Hindi Phonetic keyboard (easiest for typing English sounds that automatically convert into Hindi).
  4. Switch between English and Hindi keyboards quickly with Win + Space.

On macOS:

  1. Go to System Settings (or System Preferences) → Keyboard → Input Sources.
  2. Click the + button and search for "Hindi".
  3. Add Hindi Transliteration (type English phonetically to get Devanagari).
  4. Switch keyboards easily using Control + Space.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

1. Font does not appear in Word: Restart Microsoft Word completely. If it was running in the background, terminate it from Task Manager, reopen, and type the font name directly into the font box.
2. Devanagari characters look broken or show question marks: Make sure you are using a modern Unicode font (not legacy non Unicode Kruti Dev or Devlys). If you have old Kruti Dev files, use our free Unicode Converter to convert legacy text to universal Unicode.
3. Install button is greyed out on Windows: Run the installer with Administrative rights (right click the font file and select "Run as administrator" or "Install for all users").
4. Font looks pixelated on screen: The font may lack screen hinting for smaller font sizes. Use a screen-optimised font family such as Hind, Poppins, or Noto Sans Devanagari for body text.
